My Gal Sal – With Didgeridoo Effects On The Bass Clarinet

Glenn Henrich plays didgeridoo effects on his bass clarinet in this clip of the 1920s Bakelite Trio at The Powerhouse Museum today (Sunday). The song is ‘My Gal Sal’. Banjo is Grahame Conlon. Singer is myself, Greg Poppleton

Glenn happened to mention to Grahame and myself before the set, just five minutes before this recording, how the bass clarinet can sound like a didge. So I asked him to give it a go on ‘My Gal Sal’ which he gladly did. We hope you enjoy the results. If you would like to book the Broadcasters (trio – sextet), please visit Sydney’s 1920s-1930s band website, www.bakelitejazz.com

Spike Jones & A Musical Dingbat

Happy Financial New Year Phantom Dancers!

Well, at last I’ll be back in the 2SER studios tomorrow to bring you The Phantom Dancer live! I’m looking forward to presenting the show I had scheduled for you three weeks ago this 12 noon Tuesday 3 July (+10 GMT)

By request on this week’s Phantom Dancer, you get to enjoy once more an Alvino Rey set from a 1942 Spotlight Bands Blue Network broadcast which I played just over a year ago. In particular, the requester asked for the song ‘Cash for Your Trash’

The requests email address is phantomdancer@2ser.com

Alvino Rey, born Alvin McBurney, was a bandleader and pioneer electric guitarist. He built his first amplified guitar pickup in 1923 at the age of 15, but didn’t patent it. Gibson had him help design a pickup for their first electric guitar, the ES-150 in 1935

Quoting Wiki, “Starting in 1939, Rey used a carbon throat microphone to modulate his electric guitar sound. The mike, developed for military pilots, was worn by Rey’s wife Luise, who stood behind a curtain and sang along with the guitar lines. The novel combination was called “Singing Guitar”, and later became known as the Sonovox. Along with early Vocoders (initially called Voders), which were initially developed to scramble messages between the Pentagon and field commanders during WWII, the Sonovox innovation was one the first known talk box experiments. A Soundie film of Rey using the Sonovox is posted on YouTube and further info about Rey and the Sonovox can be found in the Dave Tomkin’s book, “How To Wreak A Nice Beach” (How to Recognize Speech)”

This week’s Phantom Dancer Video of the Week is all about Spike Jones and a Dingbat virtuoso playing Holiday For Strings

Enjoy!

Bix Plays With Puffed Cheeks

Greetings Phantom Dancers!

A mix of two classic Phantom Dancers for you this week as I will be in another studio mixing the latest Greg Poppleton & his Bakelite Broadcasters CDs

Yep! CDs. Two albums, possibly 3 albums, recorded live in a studio over 9 hours. I aim to get the first CD out to you both physically and digitally by late September. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, you can see and dance to Greg Poppleton & his Bakelite Broadcasters next weekend at…

Saturday 30 June, Penrith RSL, Swing Out West, 8 Tindale St Penrith, 2 – 5pm
Sunday 1 July, Concrete Blonde, Sunday Jazz Lunch, 33 Bayswater Road Kings Cross, 12:30 – 3:30pm

Phantom Dancer Video Of The Week: Here’s some curious footage of Bix Beidebecke with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra from a 1928 Newsreel. Enjoy!

(Next day) Incredibly, another example of someone who doesn’t own the footage, posting on YouTube then jealously making sharing difficult. A case of honour amongst thieves? Amazing!

Alvino Rey Sonovox & Stringy The Guitar By Request

G’day Phantom Dancers,

By request on this week’s Phantom Dancer, you get to enjoy once more an Alvino Rey set from a 1942 Spotlight Bands Blue Network broadcast which I played just over a year ago. In particular, the requester asked for the song ‘Cash for Your Trash’

The requests email address is phantomdancer@2ser.com

This week, two Phantom Dancer Videos of the Week explaining the Sonovox. The first is a brief explanation from the Disney studios. Is the chappie asking the questions the voice of Bugs Bunny, Mel Blanc?

And here’s the Alvino Rey Sonovox clip with ‘Stringy The Guitar’. All Stringy’s voices are done through Alvino Rey’s pedal steel…

Antiques & Collectibles Magazine

Thought I’d let you in on the big secret that Antiques & Collectibles Magazine http://www.acpp.com.au have featured me in their ‘Final Word. 60 Seconds with…” interview page in their just released Winter 2012 Edition (Issue 45)

Antiques and Collectibles is a quarterly magazine published by Julie & Christine Carter in Coffs Harbour and available in newsagents across Australia. It’s great to read such a well-produced glossy, published not by the big multinationals, but by two dynamic sisters who are passionate about quality magazines and publishing. They also publish a bridal magazine: http://www.facebook.com/affordableweddingsmagazine

As I say, Antiques and Collectible can be bought in newsagents across Australia. But if it isn’t in yours, or it’s sold out, you can email A & C at info@acpp.com.au

Antiques & Collectibles Magazine

Antiques & Collectibles is a quarterly glossy much respected in the industry and published by the dynamic Julie & Christine Carter from Coffs Harnbour

In the interview I answer questions like “what was the first record I ever bought?”, “the best book I’ve read so far?” and the “worst thing about TV?”. The answers give some background to The Phantom Dancer Radio Show (Swing & Jazz from live 1920s-60s Radio & TV) and the Bakelite Broadcasters 1920s-1930s Band. As for the worst thing about TV – there isn’t any – I love it all – it employs me on its dramas and comedies and on those little documentaries in between called commercials!

In the Winter 2012 Edition of Antiques and Collectibles you can read articles on…
- History of Australian Telly
- Olympic Posters
- Beauty Through The Ages
- WWI Trench Art
- 20th Century Pewter
- Hermes Handbags
- Alarm Clocks
and plenty more, including a fascinating ‘Ask The Experts’ page where readers send in photos of their interesting antiques and curios for a bit of history and valuation

Enjoy!

New 1920s Great Gatsby Dance Orchestra Launch

Saturday 28 April saw the successful launch of Sydney’s newest Great Gatsby 1920s Dance Orchestra – The Lounge Bar Lotharios…

The Lounge Bar Lotharios - Reeds & Brass Section

The Lounge Bar Lotharios - Reeds & Brass Section. Front row soprano, alto, tenor, baritone saxes and clarinets l-r Paul furniss, Ron Nairn, Alan Solomon. Back row trumpets and trombone l-r Ben Gurton, Geoff Power (musical director) Al Davey

The Lounge Bar Lotharios feature Sydney’s Top 10 Vintage Jazz Musicians playing authentic 1920s dance band arrangements fronted by Sydney’s only authentic 1920s jazz singer, Greg Poppleton, under the musical direction of Geoff Power

Geoff Power is a world-renowned classic jazz trumpeter who has toured the US nine times, played jazz festivals and clubs in New York, Los Angeles and throughout the US, recorded a CD in New Jersey with leading NYC musicians including Vince Giordano, and played with many leading US musicians

Penrith RSL witnessed its biggest crowd ever for any jazz show. The room was full. The slow 1920s numbers filled the dance floor and the hot dance tunes had everyone’s toes a-tappin’

1911 King St Newtown Garage Sign Completely Vandalised

That valuable piece of our industrial history has now been finally destroyed. The 1911 garage sign with ads for early Australian icons such as Perdriau Tyres, Waratah Motor Spirit and Cars For Rent (in 1911!!!!) is now completely gone. If you don’t know what sign I’m talking about, here’s the link to the original story

This morning I was walking up King Street when I noticed one end of the chain mesh fence that closed off the vintage garage sign from King Street had been pushed aside

No fence is going to get in the way when there's paintin' work to be done!

“Hello,” I thought, “What surprise awaits me?”

A blank grey wall – with – wait for it – some tagger’s scribble. Already! The tagger even “copyrighted” their scribble with a “c” and the date! Got to laugh! Have a look….

But the blank grey wall! All the historic 1911 sign is now gone. And here’s another laugh. The painters carefully painted around a metal strip! Derrrrr! The metal strip seems to have been put in to stabilise the top fascia on the adjoining fire-damaged shopfront

Careful! Paint over our history, but careful with the metal strip!?!

The vacant lot is up for sale. The sale sign went up a few days ago

Now I’m just reporting the facts as we can all plainly see them in the photos. I have no idea who, when, how, why, what? I will not speculate. I do not accuse

Here’s one last photo. After the last bit of graffiti went up that wiped out the bottom half of our history contained in the 1911 sign, someone leant a chipboard sign up against the vandalised wall. The sign read “Marsh. Dumb ass”. The grey painters have blotted out the name, Marsh

Fortunately, due to this blog, the sign has been measured and will be reproduced full size in the Motor Life Museum, Albion Park. Here’s the story. But could it have been the interest stirred up by this blog that lead person or persons unknown to destroy our valuable first hand history before the land was put up for sale? 101 years old and now out
