In My Merry Oldsmobile

What a song, what a car (one of the longest lived car brands) what a show!

Yes, it’s another classic Phantom Dancer this Tuesday and Saturday. A show from 2009 with so much great music I really enjoyed editing it for rebroadcast for you. I hope you enjoy listening to it. But do I have a play list? No. It went to air before this blog started in September 2009

Anyhow, I can tell you it has live swing and jazz from 1930s – 50s radio broadcasts by Kay Kyser, George Shearing, Phil Harris, Gene Krupa and more

And at the end I’ve added “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter” from the new greg Poppleton and his Bakelite Broadcasters CD ‘Doin’ The Charleston‘. It was the song from the CD chosen to be played by Mr Jesse on his Hey Mr Jesse podcast and by Robbie Buck on Radio National for The Inside Sleeve

And as for My Merry Oldsmobile, well a 1932 sing-a-long cartoon of the song is this week’s Phantom Dancer Video of the Week. Enjoy!

Vintage Jazz TV On The Phantom Dancer Radio Show

Hi-Ho Phantom Dancers,

Hope you enjoyed Lassie ‘singing’ on last week’s show. This Tuesday and Saturday on The Phantom Dancer your highlights include: Charlie Parker on WPIX TV NY in 1949 with Joe Bushkin, Chubby Jackson and George Wettling, Billie Holliday on WNTA TV NJ with Mary Osbourne on guitar (though you can barely hear her) and Mark Murphy on the ‘Stars in Jazz’ TV Show from 1958, hosted by Bobby Troup

Since there’s so much TV on the radio on this week’s Phantom Dancer, this week’s Video Of The Week is a ‘Stars in Jazz’ clip from 1956 featuring pianist Pete Jolly and his trio. The clip was uploaded by Pete Jolly’s son which makes it extra special. And the beverage ad in the middle is a killer. Enjoy!

1911 Garage Mural To Be Restored

Hello Fans of the 1911 Mural on King Street Newtown

Here’s some good news. I received it a week ago and just got permission to publish. I had been in touch with The Powerhouse Museum about this rare treasure in Australian commercial art. They passed my email and pictures on to more specialist museums…

“Greg

You may be surprised to hear from us, but the info re the c1911 mural at Newtown was referred to us by the Powerhouse Museum as an item of interest. We have been to the site, measured a few critical bits, and the committee has decided to reproduce the mural in a prominent spot here at The Australian Motorlife Museum!  Whilst the wall in question may not be destroyed by developers, it will almost certainly be covered by the erection of a replacement building on the burnt out site.  We have access to resources which will allow us to do so authentically, and will very soon be speaking with a couple of “tame” signwriters who can do the work.  All in all we trust you will see that this is about as good a result as can be managed in the circumstances.  (Some of our people thought I would be up at Newtown bringing the thing here brick by brick, but of course the people in the shop whose outer wall carries this signage may not like the breeze?

A search of the tenants of this site reveal the probability that the only relevant tenant was in 1911/12.

Regards

Wendy Muddell

For those of you who aren’t up-to-date on what I’m talking about, here is the link to the original post on this blog about the 1911 mural, how I dated it, and a description of the motor products it advertises: Demolition Reveals 1911 Garage Wall Ad, King Street Newtown

And here’s a link to a later entry on this blog after the historic commercial artwork was vandalised with baby scribble. The comments tell the story of what readers, residents, art lovers and grafitti artists felt. (It was attacked a second time by some mushroom practicing their signature, too, but most of that’s been repaired by an unknown hand): Rare 1911 Newtown Art Work Defaced By Lame Tagger

Here’s some photos I took of the signage before it was pratted…

Goodrich Silvertown Orchestra, Boswell Sisters & Betty Boop

Salutations Bakeliters!

Well, The Phantom Dancer (2SER 107.3 Sydney Tuesday 12 noon and Saturday 6pm) has a few delectable swing radio rarities for you this week. (Live stream)

First off, I never knew swing gospel singer and guitarist, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, sang with the Erskine Hawkins’ Orchestra. But she did, on-air, in 1943, and you’ll hear it this Tuesday and Saturday on the Phantom Dancer

And I’ve seen so many photos, heard so many commercial recordings by R. A. Rolfe’s Goodrich Silvertown Orchestra, and now, here they’ll be, live on this week’s Phantom Dancer, backing the Boswell Sisters! They follow a brief drama about tyres, which you’ll also hear from the same show, but it’s the ginger ale subplot in this little dramatisation which I personally find most interesting

And I’ll be giving another double pass away to a 2SER subscriber this Tuesday to see Greg Poppleton & his Bakelite Broadcasters at the Blue Beat, Double Bay, Wednesday 15 February. Tix at door or through Moshtix: $10

This week’s Phantom Dancer Video of the Week: oop-boop-a-doop, another Betty Boop! Enjoy…
