Thank you for coming to our February Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters shows.
The Great Art Deco Ball, the Big Band Show at The Concourse and the Gin Mill Social at Slide were all great events, if I do say so myself (ahem!). Such a shame Jazz In The Pines was cancelled on the day. It’s an outdoor event and it was pouring with rain.

WHAT HAPPENED IN FEBRUARY?
Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters opened the second Gin Mill Social for 2014 at Slide on Friday 21 February. The boss liked us so much he’s made the Bakelite’s opening one hour 7 – 8pm set a regular Gin Mill feature, booked until August.
“Thanks for another excellent show. Very pleased to have you as a regular now.”
In Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters for the Fri 21st Gin Mill Social were Greg Poppleton (voc) Geoff Power (tp and sousaphone) and Paul Baker (banjo).
Chuck Morgan will be back in the Bakelites with Clara Bow’s ukelele, and with his banjo on his knee, for the next Gin Mill Social, Friday 14th March.
SWING BIG BANDS AT THE CONCOURSE
It’s always a great thrill to MC the afternoon ‘radio show’ swing concerts put on by jazz promoter, John Buchanan.
The Sunday 2nd February show at The Concourse, Chatswood, was John’s biggest and most successful. The 800 seat concert hall was full. The swing band directed by Geoff Power played six different 15 minute 1930s-style band remotes in the guise of Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Harry James, Tommy Dorsey and the big crowd-pleaser, Glenn Miller. And I get to play the John Reed King-style New York network radio announcer – always getting a big laugh with the vintage cigarette ads.
I didn’t get a photo at The Concourse, but here’s one of me MC’ing the 1940s Gala, with a touch of the Ernie ‘Bubbles’ Whitman, for the 2013 Canberra Centenary in the Albert Hall, Canberra.
JAZZ IN THE PINES
We were very much looking forward to playing for you al fresco at Dural. But the heavens opened and the show was unfortunately cancelled. Fingers-crossed we might see you at Jazz In The Pines in 2015!
BACKTRACK FEATURE FILM
This new movie starring Academy Award best actor winner, Adrien Brody, and Sam Neill, finished shooting in mid-February. I shot one last tiny scene on February 4th at Central Station. Also in the movie are Anna-Lise Phillips and Bruce Spence.
