Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters were invited to play at the Waiheke International Jazz Festival 2016 in New Zealand over the Easter weekend.
You can read the story so far on the Waiheke Part 1 post.
And now for Part 2…
The band’s first show was in the Artworks Theatre, Oneroa.
“FANMAIL ALERT!!! Hi Greg. I “met” you (not in person) during your Friday evening performance at the Waiheke Jazz Festival. I live my life on purpose and in the moment, rarely missing a calling / opportunity. However, during your performance I totally froze when you made eye contact, and I could not bring myself to talk to you afterwards. I regret not telling you that your music has moved and inspired me. Thank you for giving of yourself so generously! With best wishes for your future,” W.T. NZ
With me in the Bakelite Broadcasters for Waiheke were Greg Chilcott (sousaphone and trombone) and Arthur Washington (guitar).
The Friday night bill for the Artworks Theatre was George Washingmachine, Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters, followed by Liam Burrows. A quick snap I took of the audience
A shot of the midnight moon taken on my pocket camera as I strolled the 20 minutes home to Hekerua Bay from the gig
Saturday afternoon, Greg Chilcott joined George Washingmachine and Arthur at their gig in the Aperitivo in Oneroa. I sat in on ‘Avalon’, changing the title in the second chorus to ‘Oneroa’, singing personally to everyone in the bar, then high-stepping to the exit, waving my hat in a grand flourish to head for the beach.
Took a stroll to Ostend. Since NZ has no poisonous snakes and its one poisonous spider lives in sand dunes, I did what I certainly could never do in Australia – popped in off the roadway into a web-free, snake-free, leech-free and very dense, fern forest. Beautiful!
Saturday night was the big show at Morra Hall, with Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters supporting LA-based, New Zealand singer/songwriter of melodic, lyric-based pop, Greg Johnson.
I’ll post photos from Morra Hall for you by Steve Bone in Part 3 of Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters at The Waiheke International Jazz Festival.
