Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters returned to one of our favourites venues on Saturday – Fairfield Museum – for their Carols in the Gardens.
Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters quartet played: Greg Poppleton 1920s singer, Geoff Power sousaphone and trumpet, Jim Elliot alto sax and clarinet, Grahame Conlon guitar.
This beautifully laidback community event is held in the leafy courtyard of the museum.
The museum itself is like a little town with historic buildings sourced from demolition sites in the local area. There’s an 1890s weatherboard house and school room, an art gallery, machine shed, printery and grocers.
Around the courtyard, locals set up Christmas biscuit and sand art stalls. On the stage facing the courtyard, Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters opened the two hour entertainment with 1920s jazz and carols.
In between, local groups serenaded in English, Spanish and Mandarin. Children from the local primary school sang a well-programmed medley of carols accapella.
Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters are Australia’s only authentic 1920s singer and speakeasy Great Gatsby jazz band of world-touring musicians.
