10 January Phantom Dancer – 1924 Sound Film Ben Bernie Jazz Orchestra

HEAR your Jan 10 Phantom Dancer mix ONLINE at 2SER radio

Today on your non-stop mix of swing and jazz from live 1920s-60s radio you’ll hear a set of Australian dance bands my parents danced to in the 1930s, Frank Coughlan and his Trocadero Orchestra, Jim Davidson and his ABC Dance Orchestra and Dudley Cantrell’s Grace Granadiers (who played in the Grace Brothers department store ballroom on Broadway in Sydney.)

There’s also a set of women band leaders on the wireless Ella, Billie, Anna Mae Winburn and a set of jazz from swinging 60s radio and TV by Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa and the Charlie Shavers Quartet without Charlie Shavers.

Eight sets in total – names, bands, song titles and the originating radio station and date are listed in the play list below.

The play list is after The Phantom Dancer video of the Week.

Here is The Phantom Dancer Video of the Week. “A very important bit of film, both for the history of Film and Music in the early twentieth century! Surely one of the earliest films with the sound printed on the nitrate film itself instead of a separate disc or cylinder. It was produced by the De Forest Phonofilm system, which unfortunately was met with little success because there was no backing by any major studio. All that came of it were a few films of mostly musical subjects – which were at the time still making records by the acoustic process!” Alex Allen, YouTube. Enjoy!

Make sure you come back to this blog, Greg Poppleton’s Radio Lounge, every Tuesday, for the newest Phantom Dancer play list and Video of the Week!

Thank you.
