January Newsletter – Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters

HELLO Bakelite Broadcasters and Lounge Bar Lotharios,
December was a frantic end to a busy year of 1920s and 1930s music making for both Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite BroadcastersI’ve posted some action pics for you below…
REVIEW
A review from an American writer / director who saw Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters at The Rocks Village Bizarre Gin Mill Social shows in November…
“Damn, I wish I had known you when we had a theatre. We would have called you over to perform with us in a minute! The thing that got both Lynn and me, besides your great voice was your ability to “sell a song” and your particular energy and pronunciation which came across as completely American! Not sure an Australian would see that as a compliment, but you were singing what amounts to virtual American “folk” music. And that trio, which I mentioned at the time, was an absolute knockout. And the kid of the tuba, he is ready for New Orleans if he cares to go try it. ” Lance Belville, Writer / Director, San Francisco (USA)
BANDCAMPThe Band YouTube Video is now at 187 660 views, up from 150 660 on 2nd December when the November newsletter was sent to your inbox.

Listeners have left some really nice comments about the video on YouTube. And the stereo version of the 53’53” YouTube 1920s-1930s Band Chill Mix soundtrack has been downloaded plenty (for just a few dollars) from BANDCAMP. The download cover artwork is by my 11 year old son, Damon…

““Awesome. Totally fun,””  Jesse Miner, Manu Smith, ‘Hey Mr Jesse’ podcast (USA)

“There’s nothing like stumbling across an artist who is fresh, original, filled with musical integrity, and especially one that has a unique perspective on the familiar. Australian Jazz vocalist extraordinaire Greg Poppleton is such an artist…”  Gerald H. Beulah, Jr., JazzReview.com (USA)

1930s Swing at Sydney Rowers Club. Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters

Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters played at Jazz on the Deck at Sydney Rowers Club today, Sunday 28 December.

STOP PRESS: Greg Poppleton returns to Sydney Rowers in 2015.
Greg Poppleton Jazz on the Deck dates are:
Sunday July 19,  3-6pm, Free

Sydney Rowers Club, 613 Great North Road, Abbotsford, overlooks the Parramatta River at Hen & Chicken Bay. Founded in 1870, the club established its Abbotsford branch in 1874 at what was the ‘Red Cow Inn’.

From the club website history page, the location was,
“beautifully situated at a bold point of the river only seven miles from Sydney. There were already adequate facilities for members to remain whilst training and stop for the night if required. There was also plenty to do if tired of rowing; including fishing and shooting in the adjacent bush.”

Sadly, the “adjacent bush” was chopped down for housing after WW1 (my grandmother remembered the ironbark forest. She moved into the area in 1917 with my baby father).

Here are some pictures I took of Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters and the audience at Jazz on the Deck, today, Sunday 28 December. We look forward to playing again for the good people at Sydney Rowers…

‘Stars In Jazz’ TV Show Jack Teagarden. Phantom Dancer Show 13 Jan 2015

Hello Phantom Dancers,

I had planned this 13 Jan. show to be the first live 2SER Phantom Dancer radio show for 2015 (I was on holidays last week). But I’ve been booked to do voiceovers for a commercial radio station. The book is for just when the Phantom Dancer goes to air.

So, of course, I immediately deferred to entertainment experts to carefully hand pick a premium, bespoke encore Phantom Dancer presentation for you taken off the very top shelf.

These PhDs in entertainment are 99.99998% sure you will enjoy today’s classic selection, especially the two add-on numbers at the end of the show by Lee Morse and the Adolf Steimel Organum-Tanz-Orchester.

HEAR THE SHOW NOW (until February)

What’s more, this Tuesday’s Phantom Dancer, 12 noon 107.3 2SER Sydney, online at 2ser.com, and on over 30 stations of the Community Radio Network, will also bring to your eager ears live 1920s-60s radio by John Kirby and his Sextet, the Johnny Guanieri Quintet, and Sandman from a 1935 Congress Hotel broadcast by the Benny Goodman Orchestra. And there’s a couple of songs by Mildred Bailey.

You can see the full play list after this week’s Phantom Dancer Video of the Week. This week’s video is Jack Teagarden and his All-Stars on a ‘Stars In Jazz’ TV Show, Los Angeles TV, 1956. The host is singer, Bobby Troup, lyricist for the songs Route 66 and My City Of Sydney. And all the great 50s ads are intact! Back to dramatic Demonstrations in Physics with Julius Sumner Miller next week.

Cheers,
Greg Poppleton
Your Phantom Dancer.
