The Greg Poppleton 1920s-30s trio played for a wedding in the garden at Hopewood House, Bowral.
The thunder rumbled but the rain stayed away for a beautiful ceremony and reception.
Greg Poppleton serenaded guests with songs from the 1920s and 30s selected from the Greg Poppleton play list by the bride and groom. Songs chosen included Begin the Beguine, Cheek to Cheek and Falling in Love Again.

Saturday night and Greg Poppleton was singing the songs of the 1920s and 1930s with his band at Simon and Aleis’ beautiful wedding at Bush Bank. Bush Bank is an old dairy farm on the coast just south of Kiama, two hours drive (or train + walk) from Sydney.
Having a live 1920s – 1930s jazz and swing band can make a fantastic difference to your wedding. Having Australia’s only authentic 1920s – 30s singer and band gives you the biggest emotional impact.

In the band video below, I filmed the crashing waves about a year ago just where you see the white breakers in the picture above. Enjoy the 1914 hit, ‘They Didn’t Believe Me’ by the Greg Poppleton 1920s vocal, guitar and clarinet trio in a contemplative mode. The song is from the band’s album ‘Back In Your Own Backyard‘ available from Bandcamp, CDBaby and iTunes.Â
And here’s the band playing ‘Yes, We Have No Bananas’, also from the album ‘Back In Your Own Backyard‘. And the film was also taken just over a year ago and just at the back of Bush Bank along the Kiama – Gerringong bush walk. Enjoy!

WE’VE BEEN TO THE REGISTRY OFFICE
and we’ve changed the band name and web address
Yes, we’ve taken the plunge.
Due to many requests, the band name Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters has been changed and shortened.
Now it’s a name we’re sure you’ll find easier to say, easier to write and easier to remember – Greg Poppleton.
The band website name has changed, too. It was bakelitejazz.com. Now it’s gregpoppletonmusic.com.

Made up of some of Australia’s finest, world-touring and multi-recorded jazz musicians, Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters is lead by authentic 1920s – 1930s singer Greg Poppleton.
The band entertained for background and dancing with music from the 1920s, fitting into the overall 1920s / Great Gatsby theme for Lana and Florian’s wedding reception.
Lana and Florian chose La Vie En Rose (Louis Armstrong) for the band to play as the bridal dance.
Here are some quick snaps I took for you of Australia’s only authentic 1920s-30s singer and band as well as the 1920s decorated room. Enjoy. And as I say, they’re quick snaps!

The band’s first show was in the Artworks Theatre, Oneroa.
Artworks Theatre, Oneroa. First Waiheke gig for Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters
“FANMAIL ALERT!!! Hi Greg. I “met” you (not in person) during your Friday evening performance at the Waiheke Jazz Festival. I live my life on purpose and in the moment, rarely missing a calling / opportunity. However, during your performance I totally froze when you made eye contact, and I could not bring myself to talk to you afterwards. I regret not telling you that your music has moved and inspired me. Thank you for giving of yourself so generously! With best wishes for your future,” W.T. NZ
With me in the Bakelite Broadcasters for Waiheke were Greg Chilcott (sousaphone and trombone) and Arthur Washington (guitar).
The Friday night bill for the Artworks Theatre was George Washingmachine, Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters, followed by Liam Burrows. A quick snap I took of the audience

Saturday afternoon, Greg Chilcott joined George Washingmachine and Arthur at their gig in the Aperitivo in Oneroa. I sat in on ‘Avalon’, changing the title in the second chorus to ‘Oneroa’, singing personally to everyone in the bar, then high-stepping to the exit, waving my hat in a grand flourish to head for the beach.
Took a stroll to Ostend. Since NZ has no poisonous snakes and its one poisonous spider lives in sand dunes, I did what I certainly could never do in Australia – popped in off the roadway into a web-free, snake-free, leech-free and very dense, fern forest. Beautiful!

Saturday night was the big show at Morra Hall, with Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters supporting LA-based, New Zealand singer/songwriter of melodic, lyric-based pop, Greg Johnson.

Greg Poppleton was thrilled to play for the wedding of Rick and Jillie in Rose Bay.
As always, we played Sydney’s only authentic 1920s – 1930s hot jazz, ballads and swing all night.
In the band: Greg Poppleton authentic 1920s-1930s singer, Todd Hardy trumpet, Ben Jones tenor sax doubling clarinet, Grahame Conlon guitar doubling banjo, Greg Chilcott sousaphone and Alex Inman-Hislop drums.
Greg Poppleton serenaded guests as they celebrated Rick and Jillie with drinks in the terraced garden, followed by dinner music, then two sets for dancing that filled the dance floor. Sound was by Tony Jex.
Thank you, Rick and Jillie, for having Greg Poppleton at your warm, magnificent reception.

Alex Inman-Hislop is gaining a reputation as a hot, new drummer. He is very busy. He’s played with Greg Poppleton at Thredbo Jazz, Cronulla RSL, Spring Into Jazz, Glenaeon and more. Here, Alex, is wowing the wedding party with Duke Ellington’s Caravan.

Greg Poppleton , Australia’s only authentic 1920s-30s singer and his Jazz Deco trio were creating a genuine Great Gatsby vibe at a fully costumed 1920s themed Murder Mystery Fun party for a large corporation recently.
And at one end of the heritage venue was another very popular attraction – the ULTIMATE PHOTO BOOTH –Â set up by Open Booths Australia. Here’s how it works…
This is how the ULTIMATE PHOTO BOOTH looked at the 1920s Corporate Party.
With photographer, backdrop, professional lighting and lots of props, it was like having your own fully professional photo studio at your event.
For this event, the backdrop was plain black. But for other events, such as the MTV awards, backdrops can be corporately branded.
The very friendly Open Booths photographer at this particular 1920s event (with the client’s wholehearted permission) invited Greg Poppleton to pose in the ULTIMATE PHOTO BOOTH for a demonstration. Here’s the result…
The result – a photo taken of Greg Poppleton in an Open Booth.
In less than a minute after the flash went, every band member was given the professional quality, 6 x 4 glossy colour photo you see above…
Open Booths Australia has other photo options, too, to cover all event types (corporate, wedding, party) and budgets.
The Super Photo Station…
There’s the SUPER PHOTO STATION – open, closed, whichever way you want.
The #YouTake Station…
The Open Booths #YouTake Station allows you take the photo with your phone, upload your photo to Instagram or Twitter, and collect your photos as soon as you post! Two birds with one stone, so to speak.

Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters had the great joy of playing at Amalia and Jacob’s beautiful art deco wedding today, in the 1930s Paramount Pictures building, Surry Hills.
Amalia and Jacob have seen Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters previously at The Gin Mill Social, Slide, the Great Art Deco Ball Carrington Hotel Katoomba and the Soda factory 1925 Prohibition Party.
And they listen every week to Greg Poppleton on The Phantom Dancer – swing and jazz from live 1920s-60s radio and TV.
Inside the Paramount building is the Golden Age Cinema and Bar where the wedding and reception was held. I may have some more pictures to show you in a month. Amalia and Jacob have said they’ll pass some on.
Paramount House is a cultural, architectural and literal cornerstone of the area of Surry Hills once known as the ‘Hollywood Quarter’. Built in 1940 in a Late Deco style, it shows how elegance can be achieved by focusing on what is essential.
