1920s Great Gatsby Corporate Cruise with Greg Poppleton

Greg Poppleton (1920s Trio) played for a big Great Gatsby themed corporate Harbour Cruise recently staged by Avant Garde Events. Sound by Tony Jex Audio Visual Services.

This is the third major event we have been booked for by Avant Garde. I’ll post some video from earlier events soon. And in keeping with all Avant Garde Events, the night sparkled.

In the trio were Greg Poppleton, authentic 1920s singer, Greg Chilcott sousaphone doubling trombone and Chuck Morgan the triple threat on banjo, ukelele and guitar.

Chuck Morgan has played guitar, banjo and ukelele all over the world. In fact, in Japan he's a famous uke player.

Mosman Tea Dance – Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters

For the third year running, Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters Trio, were invited to play for the annual Mosman Tea Dance.

This year, the dance was held in the Mosman Art Gallery.

That’s my PA trolley parked out the front, resting after a half-hour bus trip from the city, a radio show, and a five kilometre walk before that. Today my PA bag also contained a swag of LPs of swing and jazz from live 1920s – 1960s radio and TV. I’d played them earlier, between 12 – 2pm, on my weekly 107.3 2SER Phantom Dancer radio show, a non-stop 2 hour swing mix. You can hear that very show online and read the play list at:  https://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2015/02/26/julius-sumner-miller-radiation-phantom-dancer-swing-jazz-show-17-march-2015/

Mosman Art Gallery is an old methodist church greatly modified. The church seems to have been founded by one, Carruthers chappie. A plaque dedicated to him by his family, and huge stained glass windows in memory of his two wives, suggest a man at conflict with Christian values of humility and modesty. Even his online biography concludes, “Sometimes the observer finds it hard to avoid the view that he had a strong interest in power.”

The dance floor filled with dancers as Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters played swing and jazz from the 1920s and 1930s. And we played ‘Begin the Beguine’ and ‘South of the Border’ as rhumbas by request, the waltzes ‘Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuss auf Liebe eingestellt’ and ‘Always’, the tango, ‘Amapola’, and foxtrots like ‘I Can’t Give You Anything But Love’ and ‘As Time Goes By’ for the ballroom dancers in the room.

You can hire Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters for your wedding, corporate event, dance and party, too. Tony can help you with any questions you have and size the band that’s just right for you. Email Tony now. Or call him, 61 2 9567 7171.
