Zelda, Magazine of the Vintage Nouveau, is a glossy annual published by the multi-talented US actor, cinematographer and stills photographer, Don Spiro.

If you’re a fan of what matters in Nouveau Vintage in the USA, then this magazine is for you. Even the ads for newly tailored vintage suits and cravats are a great resource for those of us worldwide who look sharp.

In this, the latest 2022 edition, the Zelda annual invites you to “enjoy a vintage cocktail, and listen to some old jazz while you page through the articles in this issue…”

“We start with researcher and historian Garret Richard’s take on Trader Vic’s tropical tequila classic cocktail, El Diablo, followed by Eff’s Style Emporium’s review of the allure of that vintage summer fabric, Palm Beach Cloth.

We have interviews with Jazz-Age-style singer Greg Poppleton and New York burlesque star Dandy Dillinger.

We’ll catch up on the undertakings of Philadelphia bandleader, Drew Nugent and we’ll learn about the history of the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum.”

Bush Bank Wedding Photos and Music Videos, 4 Nov 2017

Saturday night and Greg Poppleton was singing the songs of the 1920s and 1930s with his band at Simon and Aleis’ beautiful wedding at Bush Bank. Bush Bank is an old dairy farm on the coast just south of Kiama, two hours drive (or train + walk) from Sydney.

Having a live 1920s – 1930s jazz and swing band can make a fantastic difference to your wedding. Having Australia’s only authentic 1920s – 30s singer and band gives you the biggest emotional impact.

Enjoy the 1914 hit, ‘They Didn’t Believe Me’ by the Greg Poppleton  1920s vocal, guitar and clarinet trio in a contemplative mode. The song is from the band’s album ‘Back In Your Own Backyard‘ available from Bandcamp, CDBaby and iTunes.

It was great to see so many old friends who have seen the band at Penrith, Glen Street, the Sydney Jazz Club and other places, (Gary and Deborah, Margaret  M and Margaret Y, Rob, Neville, Kitty von Tastique and more), and meet lots of new friends at Cronulla, too. In all the excitement I neglected to take a picture of Geoff Power (trumpet and trombone) and myself singer. So here’s a blurry pic taken of Geoff and I at the Intercontinental Hotel in 2011.

But I didn’t forget to snap Darcy Wright (double bass) and Grahame Conlon (guitar) mid-instrumental on Alice Blue Gown, Greg Poppleton, Cronulla RSL Sunday Jazz.

What Harry Manx And Greg Poppleton Have In Common

Here’s a quote from an interview with musician Harry Manx by Mark Bannerman (ABC TV). It struck a chord (no pun intended) with me instantly…

“I’m lucky”, he says.

“There are not a lot of people mixing Indian ragas and blues,” you can hear a faint chuckle as he says it. He pauses and reflects.

“On shows like The Voice I wouldn’t last a second.”

I also feel very lucky. There are not a lot of people singing the songs of the 1920s and 1930s authentically.

And I know, that since I have no pop sensibility whatsoever, I also wouldn’t last a second on The Voice.

And, like Harry Manx, I also know that the music I and the Bakelite Broadcasters make ‘uplifts’ and takes people on ‘a journey within.’

And that’s the wonderful thing every time we play.
