Ballarat Christmas Carols: Ted Furlong in 1957 His Great Grandson Matt in 2019

Just received an email about how radio and community action has saved a valued tradition. The backstory: on the 2018 Xmas Day edition of the 107.3 2SER Sydney Phantom Dancer, I mixed in a festive 1957 ‘Christmas Sing with Bing’ show where KNX LA & CBS ‘crossed’ to 3BA Ballarat and station manager Ted Furlong who presented a short 3BA radio remote of the annual Christmas Carols by Lake Wendouree.
Ted’s family continue contributing to the community in Ballarat and they just sent me this email about Ted’s great grandson and the annual Christmas Carols by Lake Wendouree, “Thought you may be interested in this.
Our son Matt is following in his great grandfather, Ted Furlongs footsteps with involvement in Carols by Candlelight.
Matt used the old footage in a power point presentation to re launch Carols By Candlelight in Ballarat, after they were cancelled a month ago.” And here’s a link to film of Matt and the re-launch below. Well done, Matt!
And you can hear Ted’s ‘Christmas Downunder’ broadcast, (starting at 45min 58 sec) here https://2ser.com/episodes/phantom-dancer-1200pm-25th-dec-2018/).

Carols In The Garden – Fairfield Living Museum – Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters

It was a dark and stormy night outside, but inside the machinery shed of the Fairfield Living Museum, Horsley Drive, Smithfield, it was all the fun of the Christmas Fair. The shed used to exhibit machinery, bikes, prams and more from Fairfield’s local history had a real country feel to it. And it was packed to the rafters, too, for ‘Carols in the Garden’.

On the program, Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters, entertained with 2 hot sets of 1920s jazz and Christmas songs that had crowd singing and dancing. The Spanish Language Choir opened with 5 beautiful South American carols accompanied on guitar. In between were dance performances by students of the local William Stimson School and the Shae Mowen School of Dance.

The Fairfield Advance published a story on Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters performing at the Museum for Page 3 of their mid-week edition…

Some blurry pics of the night, though for privacy I didn’t take photos of the young dancers…

Rain brought 'Carols in the Garden' into the Machinery Shed in the Fairfield Museum. It gave 'Carols in the Garden' a real country feel. Country with jazz? It felt really natural.
