Exquisite Gin Mill Social Speakeasy Photos – 8 March 2019 Party

It’s as hot as one of Gatsby’s parties, it’s The Gin Mill Social! The fun never stops as live swing musicians play all night long and vaudeville performers pop up to entertain when you least expect it.

“A night of glamour, food, drinks and entertainment…. Don’t forget your dancing shoes.”
– Broadsheet

The first of those swing bands is singer Greg Poppleton’s real 1920s trio with Geoff Power on cornet doubling sousaphone and Paul Baker, banjo. Read, see, book the Band.

It’s the 1920’s in here!

The Gin Mill Social came back with a bang to Slide Cabaret. Greg Poppleton kicked off the relaunch of Sydney’s favourite 1920s night last 13 December 2018 after an 18 month hiatus.

And Greg brings in the New Year with his sousaphone, trumpet, banjo, washboard quartet at 12-Micron Barangaroo overlooking the world-famous Sydney Harbour New Years fireworks. TICKETS

Next Gin Mill is 8 March 2019. TICKETS

Inside an old closed down bank lies the hottest spot on the strip. Its prohibition time, an era of secrecy and excess and you have the secret password…. Hang out the front of the old bank when you arrive, but look busy, we don’t want those cops spotting you.

Greg Poppleton Easter Tour 2017

Million You Tube 1920s Singer, Greg Poppleton, brings Charleston and New Orleans Jazz to Penrith, Wollongong and Darlinghurst on his Easter Tour.

The NEW Greg Poppleton band website is www.gregpoppletonmusic.com

Greg Poppleton Easter Tour 2017 - Penrith RSL 15 April, Builders Club Wollongong 16 April, Gin Mill Social 21 April

With one million total YouTube views, Australia’s only authentic 1920s jazz singer, Greg Poppleton, brings his upbeat 1920s, Charleston and New Orleans Jazz to Penrith RSL, Wollongong Master Builders Club and the Gin Mill Social at Slide Darlinghurst for his Easter Tour 2017.

Poppleton, described as Australia’s only authentic 1920s-30s jazz singer, is completely uninfluenced by contemporary music.

Easter Tour 2017 dates:
Sat 15 April 2-5pm – Penrith RSL, 8 Tindale St Penrith. FREE
Sun 16 April 2:30-5:30pm – Basement, Master Builders Club, 61 Church St Wollongong. FREE
Fri 21 April 6:45-11:30pm – Gin Mill Social (with other acts and 3 course banquet). $109+bf

Last Easter, Greg was a headliner at the Waiheke International Jazz Festival in New Zealand.

Poppleton’s genuine vintage vocal style has excited full houses at the Gin Mill Social, as well as at the Art Deco Ball of the Blue Mountains 1920s Festival five years running Sydney Festival, Thredbo Jazz and Blues, Illawarra JazzFest, The Rocks Village Bizarre and Foundry616 jazz club.

“Jazz is about the here and now,” says Greg. “Even in a show of 1920s-30s songs, everything is improvised on the spot. That makes the music fresh and exciting.”

What’s more, the music is just right for swing dancers and there’s a dance floor.

Greg is a dynamo on stage. He’s an actor in movies like Moulin Rouge, Footy Legends and Chronicles of Narnia.

In TV you’ve seen him in Peter Allen Not The Boy Next Door and Underbelly The Golden Mile. Currently he’s in a funny ad for a radio breakfast show.

Greg is Australia’s longest-running swing DJ. His multi-award-winning cult Phantom Dancer radio show, now heard on 22 radio stations across Australia, has been on-air since 1985.

Poppleton says to expect an energetic, upbeat show with stand-out performances by world-touring jazz artists.

Grahame Conlon guitar, Dave Clayton double bass, and 14 year old alto sax prodigy Damon Poppleton are in Greg’s band at Penrith and Wollongong.

At Penrith, they are joined by Bob Gillespie on drums. Bob was drummer for Maynard Ferguson’s English Orchestra, drummer and musical director for Lovelace Watkins, and drummer for Australian tours by the Glenn Miller and Les Brown swing orchestras in the 1990s.

Penrith and Wollongong are free shows.

At the last ever Gin Mill Social at Slide, Greg will open the show from 6:45pm with Geoff Power on the mighty sousaphone and trumpet, and Bradley Newman at the baby grand piano. After 8pm, you’ll be entertained by other acts at the Gin Mill, including a juggler, fan dancer, tappers, acrobatics and a second band.

On the song list will be The Charleston, My Blue Heaven, Tip Toe Through The Tulips, Falling in Love Again and On The Road to Gundagai.

“Absolutely flooring. Greg Poppleton’s 1920s – 1930s jazz and swing always hits the spot. So authentic.” – Women’s Vintage Radio (U.S).

“Your great voice, your ability to “sell a song” and your particular energy came across as completely American while sounding Australian! And that trio is an absolute knockout.” – Lance Belville, Writer / Theatre Director, San Francisco.

The Gin Mill Social runs 6:45 – 11:30pm. $109 + bf includes acrobat, fan dancer, juggler, tap dancer, second band and banquet menu.

It’s the the 1920s inside The Gin Mill Social, so dress code: guys in ties, girls in pearls.

“From arrival to departure the theme and welcome of the Gin Mill Social was outstanding. Remember you are visiting a speakeasy for social contact, entertainment and sustenance. Food, beverages and service is, as always at Slide, excellent, personable, efficient and effective. I won’t give away too much but dress to theme is highly recommended. Feathers, head bands, hats, flapper frocks and dapper gentlemen abound. Fedoras were common. You may borrow from the house collection of accoutrements upon entry if you pass the doorman’s scrutiny. Beware the ‘police’ and remember your line. Practice your dance moves and prepare to be astounded at the bands, singing, acrobatics and dedication to your entertainment.” Robert W

“Great night out at Slide celebrating the prohibition period, complete with “strong tea” served in teapots with cups and saucers. Entertainment all evening including juggling, fire eating, singing, music, tap dancing, aerial gymnastics, fantastic compere who went from table to table to chat and entertain. We even had a police raid! Staff and patrons wore period costume and a great night was had by all. The wait staff were friendly and attentive. Highly recommended and I would love to return to experience another themed night.”
